While some people may collect stamps, postcards or salt and peppershakers, John Markulin of Cleveland collects autographs of famous rock stars.

 

Erin Dickins is an original and founding member of 80s band, The Manhattan Transfer. Her career has spanned over 40 years. Her latest jazz album titled, “Vignettes,” is due for release on October 20.

 

2017 marks the 50th anniversary for the Summer of Love. What does that mean? In 1967, the youth of the time, or the counterculture as it was called, chose to identify with their own generation, rejecting the traditional roles of their parents, rebelling, protesting, attending be-ins, love-ins, expressing freedom, making their mark on life and in the history books. Harvey Kubernik provides readers with a rock history lesson in his latest book that sheds light on a new understanding of ALL that the Summer of Love embodied.

 

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland has recently unveiled a new exhibit dedicated to the career contributions of 60s group, The Zombies. The Zombies were part of the British Invasion influence that swept across America during the mid-60s. Their signature hits included, She’s Not There, Time of the Season and Tell Her No. The original band members were on hand to accept the dedication at a recent ceremony at the Rock Hall on July 12. Earlier in the month, I had the pleasure of speaking to bass player, Chris White. He spoke to me by phone from his home in London.

Grammy Award winner, Peter Asher has a career spanning over fifty years. One of his most recognizable roles was being one-half of 60s music duo, Peter & Gordon. Their hits included, “I Go To Pieces” (written by Del Shannon) and “World Without Love” (written by Paul McCartney). He then went on to become A & R for The Beatles record company, Apple. Over the years, Peter has managed James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell and Carole King.

 

Local area musician Christian Kaser has been branching out further to hone his craft of songwriting. In addition to performing shows with his band, he is also taking time to work at his studio in Nashville.

 

Shirley Stary, Vice President of Programming oversees all of the shows and events that are booked at Hoover Auditorium and the Lakeside Chautauqua area.

 

Al Jardine and Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys will be performing the album, Pet Sounds at the Hard Rock Rocksino on April 22nd. Fans will be entertained by signature songs on the album, God Only Knows, Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Sloop John B. Al was kind enough to take some time out during his busy schedule recently to discuss the tour, current projects and the longevity of his career and friendship with Brian Wilson.

 

Many will recognize Donny as the lovable and laughable character, Ralph Malph from the hit TV series, “Happy Days”. Donny is enjoying his singing career as well as his acting.

Keyboardist, Steve Porcaro recently took some time to discuss his musical influences, inspiration and longevity of the band.

Toni Tennille’s recent memoir about her life and career with former husband, Daryl Dragon is an eye opening account of what life was like once the stage lights went dark and the fans went home. Fans loved the hits by the Captain & Tennille, which included Love Will Keep Us Together, The Way I Want to Touch You, Muskrat Love and Do That to Me One More Time. Daryl was a talented musician but not capable of being fully present in a loving relationship that lasted 39 years. Toni opens up about why she decided to finally leave the relationship and write her memoirs.

 

Pat Simmons has been an anchor for this classic band since their early beginnings. It is sometimes difficult to imagine that The Doobie Brothers have been around for 50 years! Pat has played guitar for the band and has many fond memories. Songs that will immediately come to mind are Black Water, which was written by Pat, Listen to the Music, Jesus Is Just Alright, China Grove, Takin it to the Streets.

 

Ian Anderson’s career spans over 40 years with the rock band, Jethro Tull. He introduced the flute into his performances in the early days of the band. Ian’s talent and creativity has made his next project an ingenious piece that he will be performing on April 11th in Akron, OH.
